The 30% cut in funding for science education is the result of "a strategic decision to refocus programs on CSIRO's research and move away from more general science activities", a spokesman for the research agency said.
It suggests that, with an overarching sensitivity to students' cultural strengths and lives outside of school, garden-integrated curricula can be crafted to meet schools' needs for rigorous science activities as well as students' needs for supportive, interesting, authentic, and relevant opportunities to participate in the community of science.
If the National Science Foundation implements the recommendations in the report and if Congress appropriates funds for that purpose, the need for additional funding for new science activities identified by the CNIE should be satisfied.
