Ristvedt and Trinkaus found that a tendency toward low trait anxiety, worry and negative emotions measured using the Harm Avoidance Scale of the Temperament and Character Inventory was associated with delays in seeking medical help for symptoms of rectal cancer but found no relationship between these tendencies and help seeking when measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory [ 24, 54, 55].
By using the Temperament Scale of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego – Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) in longitudinally lithium-treated patients we have also demonstrated that the response to lithium correlated significantly positively with a hyperthymic temperament score and negatively with anxiety cyclothymic and depressive temperaments scores [ 20].
It could be that questionnaire measures of temperament (e.g. Restraint Scale [ 51], Eysenck Impulsivity Questionnaire [ 52]) will prove more appropriate for measuring susceptibility or current diagnosis of disordered eating behaviour at a given timepoint.
But over the next month, three leading practitioners of the instrument will turn the Purchase College Performing Arts Center into a veritable violin mecca, presenting the music of Brahms, Bach and the Bard of Avon in concerts of varying scale, style and temperament.
