To save reefs is a project akin to saving forests; one species of super coral wouldn't be enough.
Researching and saving coral reefs is the mission of Cedam, or Conservation, Education, Diving, Awareness and Marine Research, which organizes expeditions to coral cays in the Caribbean and Pacific regions, with volunteer divers (and nondivers, should they wish to sign up) helping researchers document reef life.
The scientists banded together because "a statement from a single scientist may not be enough to generate the political and leadership changes we need for saving coral reefs," Palumbi said.
"Same with Sigourney Weaver, [but] her issue was saving coral reefs".
He has worked with the Coral Reef Systems at Scripps and SDSU to communicate the importance of the issues and produced a video "Get Involved," describing the importance of saving the reefs.
"Saving some reefs in the short-term provides more opportunities for recovery and sustainability over the longer term," said Brainard, chief of the Coral Reef Ecosystem Program at NOAA's Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center. .
If we are serious about saving coral reefs and the many benefits they provide to wildlife and people, we must resist the temptation to engineer small platforms of land aimed solely at flexing geopolitical muscle.
He was "passionate" about saving the reef and "frankly" Turnbull was, too.
Martin Taylor of WWF called on state MPs to support the bill restoring clearing controls if they were "serious about preventing global warming, saving the reef and saving Queensland wildlife from extinction".
