(AP) BROOKLYN: SANITATION WORKER SHOT An on-duty sanitation officer was shot in the ear yesterday while sitting in his garbage truck in Williamsburg, the police said.
Vito A. Turso, the Department of Sanitation's deputy commissioner for public information and community affairs, estimates that 4,500 sanitation workers will be on duty over the next 24 hours, as well as more than 2,000 pieces of equipment, which include 365 salt spreaders and close to 1,600 plows attached to garbage vehicles.
The department said a total of 294 sanitation workers would be on duty to clean up in the aftermath of the party, armed with 30 mechanical brooms, 58 backpack blowers, 44 collection trucks and 58 old-fashioned hand brooms.
