In a field experiment sheep with seeds of mainly target species (experimentally attached to their coats) were present at three sand plots for 24 h.
Thirty out of 39 research plots occurred within existing managed preserves including all oak savanna, mesic prairie and wet prairie plots; while four of eight dry prairie plots and two of seven sand barrens plots occurred within managed preserves.
On sand mulched plots, prairie persistence was high.
Soil type had a significant influence on weed density in the experiment, with sand mulched plots the least weedy, and topsoil the most weedy.
The lowest emergence was recorded on sand mulched plots sown in summer, although even in this treatment emergence was satisfactory in terms of landscape practice.
