This sample transition from alkaline to acidic was continued every half an hour to three hours, and vice versa.
In their approach, the distortion is not necessarily an additive function over the pixels because the features may contain higher-order statistics such as sample transition probability matrices of pixels or DCT coefficients modeled as Markov chains [19 21].

The remaining problem of sampling the transition types themselves is equivalent to sampling paths of a discrete time Markov chain conditional on the end states, and is addressed using the standard forward backward algorithm (Baum et al., 1970).
