The first sample (derivation dataset) consisted of 219 consecutively admitted patients to six wards within three hospitals during a two-moth period.
These differences may be due to true cultural differences, although access to risk information and methodological differences (such as sample derivation and the measurement of risk perception) also contribute.
Analyses in the SUGAR study were conducted among two-thirds of the sample (derivation data set; n=653); the other one-third (n=330) were analysed as the validation data set for the final criteria.
The above sample derivation has 21 steps but research-type problems command derivations with thousands or hundreds of thousands of steps.

Most centers banked samples for future analyses, such as blood samples for later derivation of RNA and for genomics assays using high-throughput methods based on polymerase chain reaction, chip, and microarray technologies (Appendix 3 for banked samples and Table 5 for intended analyses).
