Under properly controlled conditions the salted, fermented cucumber, called salt stock, may be held for several years.

The chemostat medium contained (per L): 13.4 mL H3PO4 (85%), 0.47 g CaSO4, 9.1 g K2SO4, 7.5 g MgSO4·7H2O, 2.07 g KOH, 20.0 g methanol or glycerol, 0.5 mL antifoam, and 4.35 mL trace salt stock solution.
Then 10 μL of the iron salt stock solution was added and the sample left for 1 h to come to equilibrium, before recording the spectra, which was then re-recorded after 24 h to ensure consistency.
The media were as follows: Batch medium contained per liter: 2.0 g citric acid, 12.4 g (NH4 2HPO4, 0.022 g CaCl2· 2H2O, 0.9 g KCl, 0.5 g MgSO4· 7H2O, 40 g glycerol, 4.6 ml PTM1 trace salts stock solution.
Synthetic firefly d-luciferin potassium salt stock solutions (15 mg/mL in PBS) were prepared immediately before imaging, and then injected s.c. at a dose of 150 mg/kg 27.
