Iraqi officials have said the Americans were persuaded to compromise with Mr. Sadr last week by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's most influential cleric.

Mr. Sadr responded by staging an uprising against American troops in Baghdad and Najaf, a Shiite holy city 100 miles south of the capital, that led to one of the most violent chapters in the war.
American commanders have said they hope the Shiite establishment in Najaf will deal with Mr. Sadr, wanted by the occupation authority in connection with the killing last April of another Shiite cleric.
