If α < β, eventually all the earthquakes are cL events, but the rupture of Patch S is difficult to recognize in moment rate or moment acceleration functions as a discrete step preceding the main part of the rupture.
For example, in the case with α = 2 in Figure 16, the height of the positive peak in the moment acceleration is larger for the rupture of Patch S than for the rupture of the rest.
As α increases, the coseismic behaviors of the cL events become apparently more consistent with the stereotypical behavior and a peak in the moment rate for the rupture of Patch S becomes more distinguishable.
In this case, Patch L is ruptured by a strong perturbation (i.e., rupture of Patch S) before it ripens so that a large nucleation would occur shortly thereafter; the recurrence interval of large earthquakes (12.8 ± 3.3 years) is significantly shorter than the case without Patch S (17.5 ± 3.2 years) (Noda et al. 2013a).
After the rupture of patch membrane, a test pulse of − 30 mV from a holding potential of − 120 mV was applied to the cell until stabilization of sodium current amplitude and kinetics (typically 5 min).

We chose a 5 s prepulse duration because this was sufficient for nearly complete recovery from inactivation while minimizing premature rupture of patches during long pulses to positive pressures.
This is a small earthquake (S event) caused by rupturing of Patch S. If the afterslip of an S event settles down to the interseismic level safely, it is classified as a non-precursory S event (nS).
Peak current amplitudes again increased with the magnitude of pressure, albeit with a striking difference: pressure responses were right-shifted, as currents first became apparent at +15 mmHg and often did not reach saturation before rupture of the patch.
The effect of small patches is particularly evident when these are almost geometrically isolated and not simultaneously involved in the rupture of larger patches.
In other cases, the rupture of small patches should be significantly delayed.
These events are usually attributed to the repeated rupture of small patches on a homogeneous and stably sliding background.
