The family's nominal patriarch, Duro Cehouski, 65, arrived in 1972 and ran the lighthouse for 18 years.
When they land on the island, Briscoe runs into the lighthouse and blows himself up.
The school is run by Lighthouse International, which provides services for people with vision impairment.
Pauline Schlegel, who with her husband runs the association, a nonprofit organization that maintains the lighthouse, said more than four dozen people from Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island applied for the lighthouse keeper's job earlier this year.
A track runs the entire length of the island, connecting the lighthouse at the north tip with the two settlements and the harbour on the south coast.

A large state-run lot near the lighthouse provides overflow parking.
System-related barriers were also cited, such as the Lighthouse running out of drugs and long waiting times.
"This had never happened before," said Serge Coatmeur, who runs a lighthouse here, one of the last still operating in Brittany.
