The pCA is mostly presented as a free phenolic compound in the entire lignin complex, favored by MnP through α-β cleavage reactions (white rot fungi degradation style) [ 13, 15, 50].
Previous studies have reported significant genetic variability for reaction to stalk rot pathogens, identified sources of resistance, and determined the mode of inheritance of the traits for both Fusarium stalk rot and charcoal rot (Bramel-Cox et al. 1988; Sahib et al. 1990; Pecina-Quintero et al. 1999; Tesso et al. 2005).
Although the number of nodes crossed was often used to account for this, genotypes with variable internode length always appear different in their reaction to stalk rot, even if same number of nodes were crossed.
They also reported cleavage of β- O-4 linkages by the brown-rot fungus as the main reaction of the hardwood lignin structures.

DNA from one US collected ROT failed to amplify for all reactions.
Hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) are important oxidants in brown rot fungi and are produced via the Fenton reaction (Fe2+ + H2O2 + H+ → Fe3+ + ˙OH + H2O) (7, 14 – 14).
RNA was extracted using RNeasy Kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany), reverse transcribed using RevertAid First Strand cDNA Synthesis Kit (Fermentas, St. Leon-Rot, Germany) and PCR reactions performed using LightCycler®480 SYBR Green I Master (Roche, Munich Germany) according to the manufacturer's protocols.
This result was predicted, since P. marginalis is a "soft-rot" disease causing pathogen which does not develop HR reaction in tobacco leaves [ 28].
