Almost two decades after the "boom-boom room" lawsuit over sex harassment, women are more aware of their rights, Linda D. Friedman, a partner at Stowell & Friedman, tells Susan Antilla.
Those results showed that women's complaints of inequality on Wall Street continued to resonate eight years after Ms. Friedman and her law partner, Mary Stowell, filed the "boom-boom room" lawsuit against the Smith Barney brokerage unit of the company now known as Citigroup.
But after the Boom-Boom Room case and the Merrill Lynch lawsuit, the Securities and Exchange Commission changed the rules and said Wall Street employees with civil-rights claims could not be forced to arbitrate.
In the end, 1,900 women joined Martens v. Smith Barney, the class-action lawsuit that became known as the boom-boom room suit, after the basement party room in the Garden City, N.Y., branch of Smith Barney.
Although the hospital had liberal visitation policies, a night nurse from an employment agency insisted that Ms. Reed leave her partner's room, the lawsuit says.
