We report here the following novel findings regarding E. coli TA systems and biofilm formation: (i) Among the five studied E. coli TA systems, only mazEF and dinJ-yafQ have a role; (ii) The role of mazEF and dinJ-yafQ in biofilm formation is related to their role cell death; and (iii) A threshold of dead cells seems to be important for biofilm formation.
Moreover, the simultaneous expression of two or more TFs can synergistically influence fate suggesting that combinatorial coding also plays an influential role cell fate diversification [ 32 34].
