The number of older drivers on the roadways is increasing; at the same time, technology in the automotive environment is rapidly evolving.
It is also a fairly involved process: No more than three of the suspender ropes — each one is made up of 283 wires, according to the Port Authority — that stretch from the bridge's main cables to the roadway can be replaced at the same time, as removing more than that could destabilize the span.
The current highway was numbered Secondary State Highway 2E (SSH 2E) since at least 1939, though maps show a roadway following roughly the same alignment in existence since at least 1897.
A properly designed BRT system can push a greater number of passengers over more kilometers of roadway, faster and for lower cost, than any other available transport technology – while at the same time relieving roadway congestion, and at least some of the harm to air quality that invariably goes along with it.
