Miller's film, which sees Britain's Tom Hardy taking over from Mel Gibson as road warrior "Mad" Max Rockatansky three decades after the release of 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, has so far attracted rave reviews from critics.

With its off-kilter dialogue, memorable anti-heroes and set-piece car chases that make "Fast and Furious" films look like road-safety ads, "Mad Max: Fury Road" has certainly raised the action-film bar and will have fans clamouring for a fifth instalment.
The roads have always been there – the Wee Mad Road feels as though it has been in place since the Picts were in charge – but the whole circuit has been rebranded as the North Coast 500 (so named because it's roughly a 500-mile loop) in the hope that more people will be enticed to come and explore.

If it tips over as it careens down the road, swerving in mad competition with equally crowded rivals as they seek to pick up the next group of prospective passengers on this route, your likelihood of death or, at least, dismemberment will be extremely high.
This is all straining to convey the pregnant madness of vast Africa, where anything may occur, but to my mind it is not the 'unreality' but the reality of Africa that is so very moving in The Famished Road, and quite mad, desperate and illogical enough to satisfy any appetite.
In 'Fury Road,' a new 'Mad Max' hurtles into familiar mythology.
The waiter never goes, "Would you like a cocktail before dinner, even though if you have one drink you're pretty much guaranteed to have another, and then another, until in about ninety minutes you're out weaving around on the road like the mad dog freeway murderer you are?"
