Our aim is to construct a comprehensive model of rivalry that replicates the three key features common to all rivalry processes: leptokurtic dominance distributions, Levelt's propositions, and the role of memory, in particular for the phenomena related to stimulus blanking.
However, it is an open question whether these manipulations – image contrast in binocular rivalry and dot luminance in structure-from-motion rivalry – affect the competition process in similar ways, or whether they are different.
We started the investigation with several low-level properties of the binocular conflict, as one of the current theories suggests that rivalry is a process of low-level conflict resolution [19].

Clearly, our study provides empirical evidence for these theories [14], [31], [32] that binocular rivalry involves an initial selection process for the percept sequence and a sustained alternation process for the percept duration.
