I want to see this in the near future: "Excellent reporting and honest rigorous metrics are common for all the social enterprises we review".
This phrase from a recent report to one of the investment committee sums it up: "Poor reporting and the lack of rigorous metrics are a common problem for many social enterprises that we review".
But if public polling is vulnerable to the kind of ballot-stuffing that made nonsense of the Prospect/Foreign Affairs survey, and if Posner's more rigorous metrics are inadequate, is it possible to come up with any listing of significant public intellectuals that is not, in one way or another, arbitrary?
Until now, most rigorous metrics of scientific impact have relied on citations: the number of peer-reviewed articles a scientist has written, the "impact factor" of the journals in which they were published, and how many times other scientists have cited those articles.
While awareness, intent to buy, and volume of qualified leads are on the list, more rigorous metrics linked to P&L outcomes also belong on the marketing scorecard - accounts opened, sales closed, evidence of loyalty such as repeat purchase and recommendation to others.
