On Nov. 4 and Dec. 15, the conservancy follows the remote Contour Trail; on Nov. 17 and Dec. 2, the route is the steeper Palikea Ridge Trail.
We head out along the Rock Creek/Porcupine Ridge trail and pretty soon are in an untouched sheltered valley of snow gums.

Top tip: For maximum scenery, take the East Ridge trail to the Meadow Edge trail and then the Summit trail, which winds through a forest of huge, old-growth trees, and open fields carpeted with tall grass, wildflowers and clover.
Dene Lee, project manager for the Trust for Public Land, said the purchase protected a three-mile stretch of the Long Path, including a link to the 30-mile Shawangunk Ridge Trail, ensuring hikers improved access to the ridge.
The Falling Waters Trail in the Franconia Range provides this opportunity, particularly if you approach it from the upper end where it meets the Franconia Ridge Trail on Little Haystack Mountain (which makes for a rugged, full-day hike).
