A team of graduate students and recent graduates of the Columbia School of Journalism and the School of Engineering and Applied Science will create a system for tracking censorship in authoritarian regimes post-publication (i.e. when a story is revised or deleted after publication).
One of the four Magic Grant projects approved at Columbia this year calls for graduate students from the journalism and engineering schools to create software that can track censorship in authoritarian regimes, identifying which stories are revised or deleted after publication.
The authors analyzed the criticality and feasibility ratings and additional comments received from the 207 reviewers with the aim of determining which of the proposed criteria should be retained, revised or deleted.
The items were revised or deleted as testing progressed, based on subjects' comments.
Items with a value less than 0.5 were revised or deleted.
Items considered problematic by at least three of the reviewers were discussed further and possibly revised or deleted.
