The standard comparison callback used by qsort/bsearch/lfind takes two const void * parameters (pointers to two elements) and is expected to return a negative, zero, or positive return value to indicate whether the first is less than than the second (negative), the first is equal to the second (zero), or the first is greater than the second (positive).
