However, it is also shown that positive culture results less often concerned SSI reported in trauma patients and the less severe SSI (table 2).
Furthermore, the finding that positive culture results less often concerned the less severe SSI was only found in trauma patients (49.4% versus 84.6%, X2 = 10.11 p < 0.01) and not in other patients (72.6% versus 77.6%, X2 = 0.84 p = 0.36).
However, positive culture results less often concerned trauma patients and less severe SSI, thereby suggesting that a more conservative approach with respect to treatment of suspected SSI may be warranted in these groups.
