While restoring a house in Hastings-on-Hudson that dated to the 1850's, Mr. Tilly found that in the 1910's, tiles were added to the fireplace that clashed with its Italianate Revival style.
Now 73, a lifelong mechanic, car restorer and jack-of-all- trades, he says he spent 20 years looking for that first Hudson, hoping to restore it.
"We're looking at 200 years ago, when itinerant entertainers would wander through the area," said Althea Corey, site manager for the manor, a 1750 restored house in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.
The Hudson Opera House, which is being restored, is the host.
The performance felt a little ragged in parts, as though everyone was not quite on the same Teleprompter, until a majestic piano solo by Hudson on one of the bridges restored order.

Especially beautiful is the still-intact brick office building from 1865, which Scenic Hudson, a local nonprofit organization, plans to restore for public use.
The Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines stopped running from 3 45 until 6 15 p.m., when local service was restored.
Nowadays, when he drives one home from the garage downtown, people ask, "What is it?" The Hudsons he bought for $1,000 or so would now fetch as much as $40,000 fully restored, he said.
Efforts are ongoing to restore some passenger train service on this line for commuters heading toward New York City, including extension of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service via the Northern Branch to Englewood or Tenafly.
