The proteins they encode bind to the protein products of two important tumour suppressor genes, p53 and RB, respectively, blocking the actions of these proteins and allowing the cell to grow and divide.
However, in strain NZN111, the inactivation of LDH and PFL due to the disruption of genes ldhA and pflB, respectively, blocked the two alternate pathways and failed to regenerate sufficient NAD+ to oxidize glucose under anaerobic conditions.
