In the twenties, ragtime habits had given way to the free-spirited, resilient rhythms of the Harlem stride masters, chiefly James P. Johnson and Fats Waller, and their style was given further impetus by the improvisational bravura of Earl Hines.
And, researchers can adapt the idea of reinforcing a Resilient Zone nervous system rhythm when designing the patterns of questions in surveys and interviews.

As a black person in America born in the '50s, I have a masters level education in how to sing and dance to the tune that you choose and to be flexible and resilient enough to adjust my rhythm to match yours when you change melodies in the middle of the duet.
When ANS rhythm is outside the Resilient Zone there can be increases in such behaviors as substance abuse, self-harming, family violence, poor school and work performance, bullying, and social disengagement, to mention only a few.
Turrentine, guitarist Grant Green, pianist Horace Parlan and their rhythm team investigate "Broadway" and "Love for Sale" at brisk paces, their resilient and accessible statements flowing like a river: smooth and relaxed here, charged and forceful there.
The project imagines the re-adaptation of social and economic rhythms to the intrinsic conditions of the Great Plains environment, cultivating a resilient landscape.

And, when individuals experience a repetitive or cumulative series of negative experiences it can "wire in" the dysregulated rhythm (Scaer 2005), leaving them reactive and stuck in a state of either hyperarousal (being bumped above the Resilient Zone) or hypoarousal (stuck below the Resilient Zone) or oscillation between the two extremes as the nervous system attempts to find balance Fig. 2.
