After documenting a rising incidence of depression among students, Harvard University issued a report last year recommending, among other steps, that more psychologists be hired, that residence assistants and tutors receive instruction on mental problems and that two rooms be set aside in every living unit for students experiencing emotional crises.
Employers often consider residence assistants to be responsible and trustworthy.
For instance, after Cornell University implemented an amnesty policy, they witnessed an increase in calls to residence assistants and 911 for help dealing with an intoxicated friend (Lewis and Marchell 2006).
After adjusting for known confounding factors using multiple regression analysis, there was no significant difference in perinatal mortality according to rural versus urban residence, birth assistant and place of birth.
"That's only a small fraction of the gay and lesbian students on campus, but for the students who choose it, the floor is a real safe space, where they get a lot of support from each other," said Carrie Kortegast, an assistant residence manager at the University of Massachusetts.
The second assistant residence is located at some distance from the main cluster of buildings, to the south, and even lower.
After the flag was raised Thursday, students and staff, including Tynesha McCullers, a UVM graduate student and assistant residence director, began posting images of the flag to social media.
