The age, gender, APACHE II score, medical or surgical patients, causes for the requirement of MV, organ dysfunction/failure developed prior to MV and during MV, ventilatory parameters, duration of MV, modes of MV, tracheostomy and duration of weaning were some variables studied.
The present study showed that more than a third of GBS patients have intense anxiety at the time of their admission to ICU and that a feeling of uncertainty as to outcome was independently associated with subsequent requirement of MV.
By contrast, the SFTPA2 haplotype 1A 1 was found to be protective in a dominant model against the requirement for MV and the development of ARF and ARDS in the multivariate analysis (P = 0.015; OR, 0.16; P = 0.005; OR, 0.21; and P = 0.021; OR, 0.12).
In conclusion, the current study has shown that, in patients with GBS, anxiety is at admission often intense, increased by presence of bulbar dysfunction, focused on intubation and definitive paralysis and, when accompanied by feeling of uncertainty, independently associated with subsequent requirement of MV.
Assessment of anxiety was always performed after the patient had been informed by the physician in charge of their care about the possible course of GBS notably potential requirement of MV, and the potential for pain and a slow motor recovery as well as possible treatments.
