In 1516, the Venetian Republic granted Jews the right to settle, under strict conditions, on the site of a former geto, or iron foundry, a word whose soft "g" the German-speaking Ashkenazim could not pronounce, obliging orthographers to adopt the spelling we have today.
The other path, to continue to deny Trump's legitimacy, to decry him as an outsider hell-bent on destroying the republic, grants him that same aura of impossibility that helped him so much during the campaign.

If the Internet sometimes seems sodden with argument and counter-argument, with provocation enough to stretch on beyond the death of the republic (which, granted, hasn't seemed that far off, lately), this, Emerson's essays remind us, is nothing new.
