The electrostatic potential distribution above the Pt(100), Pt(110) and Pt(111) surfaces has been studied using finite cluster model representations of the surfaces and their ab initio Hartree-Fock electron densities.
Regardless, the spherical radii of curvature currently used clinically and in this study are only low pass filtered representations of the surfaces.
For both representations of the surfaces, a surface strip of order n along the curve p can be seen as the curve p with the truncated Taylor expansions of order n of the parametric/implicit surfaces along the curve.
The most common example is the Mercator map, a two-dimensional representation of the surface of the earth that preserves compass directions.
One, "Crater Field Near Dontrien, Lit by Flares," looks like a representation of the surface of the moon as rendered by R. Crumb channeling Vija Celmins.

From this process, images are obtained that are a space-frequency representation of the surface textures.
Atomic steps on the other hand, do show up in the representation of the surface potential (see discussion below).
