Traditional accounts basically state that there are no computations without representations, and view cognition as successfully functioning when any device can support and manipulate symbols to solve the problem given to the system.
However, such 2D stimuli can be successfully remembered using both view-dependent sensory representations and view-invariant representations of individual items, because the items in the sample and test arrays could have been compared on the basis of either the sensory features of the displays or the identities of the individual items.
