Modic type 1 change histologically represents bone marrow oedema and inflammation and are strongly associated with low back pain [ 12– 17, 17] and instability [ 14, 16].
The bulk of YFP− cells in fraction 1 and 2 did not attach to fibronectin-coated dishes and presumably represented bone marrow cells trapped in the residual trabecular fragments of the isolated growth plates.
