Since 1998, the center has maintained a repository of plasma samples frozen at –70°C by retaining specimens obtained from patients during routine phlebotomy.
The central plasma repository, which was set up in 1997, receives plasma from most EuroSIDA patients at six-month intervals.
Over the past 3 years, CEPHIA has entered into collaborations and material transfer agreements to establish a large repository of precious plasma specimens with sufficient clinical background data.
The plasma repository has also been used to test all HCV antibody positive and hepatitis B surface antigen positive patients for plasma hyaluronic acid, a marker of liver fibrosis.

These results support the thesis that the red cell represents a large repository for Pb, maintaining plasma Pb concentration within closely defined limits, and that methods other than measurements of plasma Pb will be necessary to uncover a presumably dynamic transport system between red cell and plasma.
