Racial disparities have long been evident in the U.S. criminal justice system, but a new report drilling into statistics on wrongful convictions points up exactly how nefarious the problem is.
A recent report, "Drilling California," reveals that the economic benefits of expanded fracking are based on overblown assumptions about future oil production.
The report, "Drilling Deeper: A Reality Check on U.S. Government Forecasts for a Lasting Tight Oil & Shale Gas Boom," authored by Post Carbon fellow J. David Hughes, updates an earlier report he authored for Post Carbon in 2012.
The Hughes report, "Drilling California: A Reality Check on the Monterey Shale," analyzed current production data and concluded that the estimates were likely "overstated … wishful thinking" and that only a small percentage of the shale oil believed to be trapped in the formation will ever be produced.
As discussed in Post Carbon Institute's recent report, "Drilling Deeper: A Reality Check on U.S. Government Forecasts for a Lasting Tight Oil & Shale Gas Boom," the fracking industry relies on high oil prices to stay on the drilling treadmill and keep shale fields from going into terminal decline.
