The coordination of a reward prediction error signal with a hippocampal replay sequence (for example, one that represents a trajectory towards a reward) could function to reinforce specific elements of the reactivated sequence, such as a goal location.

In contrast, nonRR VTA neurons did not coordinate with the specific spatial content of replay sequences.
Firstly, to illustrate my analysis of the p-values of the replay sequences in another way, I have shown the source of the p-values (posterior probability) of the replay sequences in Figure 5 and Figure 5 figure supplement 1.
The encoded map thus appears to serve as a template for generating replay sequences and facilitating imaginative navigation.

Reviewer #1: This paper reports that one can predict which actions a rat will take, from replay sequences and firing rates at a decision point.

Because SPW-R events may encode hippocampal spatial representations other than replay sequences, and because we may have miscategorized some replay events as nonreplay events, we also assessed the output of the reconstruction algorithm in the absence of hippocampal activity.
Taken collectively, the results of this study support this possibility, demonstrating that during quiet wakefulness but not SWS, RR VTA neurons coordinate selectively with hippocampal replay sequences and are biased in their timing towards the reactivated representation of rewarded locations.
