Figures published last week by the Bank of England showed that 3.6 million households – 14% of the total – now spend more than a quarter of their income on debt repayment, including mortgage costs.
For example for a minimum 35% share in a one-bed flat in Islington, the deposit required is £18,725, and the anticipated monthly repayment (including mortgage, rent and service charge) is £1,826.
Announcing its full-year results, UKAR said the £4bn repayment included £3.1bn of loan repayments and was up on the £2.8bn repaid in 2011.
The regression's result demonstrated that the determinants of the group member's loan repayment included the group member's age, household size, house income, and educational level, the amount of credit received, length of stay in their locality, distance to the credit source, supervision and disbursement lag.

Repayments, including interest, would be set at 9 percent of a graduate's pay for a maximum of 30 years.
"In many cases, repayments include not only the initial capital cost and financing charges, but also all ancillary services like cleaning, portering and building maintenance costs over the life of the contract," she added.
Some of the earliest innovations in mathematics were driven by the need to calculate the area of odd-shaped parcels of land, or figure out repayments including compound interest.
The repayment will include the redemption of $218 million in 8.45 percent notes due in 2008, a partial repayment of about $33 million in mortgage debt secured by four Canadian properties and a partial repayment of mortgage debt secured by two Ritz-Carlton hotels, the company said.
