ALBANY -- Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and legislative leaders struck a tentative deal on Tuesday paving the way for a vote on issues that affect millions of New Yorkers -- renewing regulation of rent-regulated apartments, capping property taxes for homeowners and raising tuition at state universities -- but reached no agreement on whether to take a vote on legalizing same-sex marriage.
The New York State Legislature renewed rent regulation laws last year, increasing the ceiling for a regulated apartment from $2,000 to $2,500 per month.
As legislators worked into the pre-dawn hours, they still had not bridged their differences over renewing rent regulations that expired at midnight.
And this coming week, the City Council is expected to ask the state to renew the regulations, and the state is expected, as usual, to comply.
The province is supposed to renew these regulations by the end of the year, but as in previous years, Severson-Baker says that deadline is likely to get pushed.
