For single polyps that did not have their epizoic flatworms removed, densities observed were 3.6±2.1, 3.2±2.6 and 4.1±4.4 individuals polyp−1 30 min−1 at prey concentrations of 250, 500 and 1,000 nauplii L−1, respectively (Fig. 5A).
By doing so, we remove density variations due to local time, season, solar cycle, and geomagnetic activity effects.
MAMA was used to remove density overlap before expansion.
Additionally, best linear unbiased predictions (BLUPs), to be used for QTL mapping, were calculated for each genotype in both densities separately using equation [1], removing density and genotype-by-density from the model.
This suggests that our pike model could be simplified by removing density-dependence in relative fecundity and natural mortality without jeopardizing the estimation of selection differentials.
Because density-mediated compensation is driven by the different starting densities in the postexposure period, controlling for starting density removes density-mediated compensation, leaving any carryover effects of the contaminant (plus error; Figure 1).
At regular intervals, more mature or apoptotic cells were removed by density gradient centrifugation.

The resulting suspension was filtered through a 100 μm mesh and cell debris and dead cells were removed by density centrifugation (FiColl Paque Plus; Amersham, Glattbrugg, Switzerland).
