The phrase "remained on the level" is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when describing a situation in which someone or something has stayed constant or steady, or has not changed. For example, "Despite the recent market turbulence, the company's stock has remained on the level."
But the interpretations put forward, even when they were founded partly on accurate observation, most often remained on the level of myth.
