The aim of this study was to evaluate in vivo the effect of saliva contamination at different stages of the bonding procedure on the bond failure rate and the adhesive remaining on teeth after debonding brackets bonded with a hydrophilic self-etching primer (Transbond Plus self-etching primer [TSEP], 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif).
Since most people do not brush their teeth after snacking, these particles can remain on teeth for hours.

The unique property of dental varnishes to remain on tooth surfaces for hours create excellent possibilities for the varnish base to penetrate deep into dentine tubules and obstruct tubule fluid movements and release high concentrations of fluoride ions forming Fap and CaF2 for a considerable time [ 40, 41].

The criteria for ARI scoring were as follows: 0, no adhesive on the tooth; 1, less than 50% adhesive on the tooth; 2, more than 50% adhesive on the tooth; and 3, all adhesive remained on the tooth.
For both groups 1 and 2, most of the adhesive remained on the tooth; however, significantly less adhesive was observed on the teeth that were debonded with the new debonding pliers.
Failures were classified as cohesive if more than 80percentnt of the resin remained on the tooth surface, adhesive if less than 20percentnt of the resin remained on the tooth surface, or mixed if certain areas exhibited a cohesive and other areas an adhesive fracture (Sengun et al., 2002).
