Pokkali showed markedly higher tolerance than IR29 in terms of symptom score and relative shoot and root growth.
The reduction of shoot and root growth were calculated as: Relative Shoot Dry Weight = (shoot dry weight in treatment)/(shoot dry weight in control) × 100%; Relative Root Dry Weight = (root dry weight in treatment)/(root dry weight in control) × 100%.

For large lateral root length, the scaling exponent was greater for high P than for low P (0.68 vs. 0.47) and both were greater than the isometric value, indicating a disproportionately larger increase in large lateral root length relative shoot dry weight, especially in high-P plants (Table 5).
Shoot elongation rate was a more sensitive indicator of stress, making it easier to visualize the stress effects than either shoot length or relative shoot elongation rate.
In contrast to roots, relative shoot and leaf allocation (SW/W, LW/W) was not significantly affected by drought stress (Fig. 1f, k; Table 1).
By the 35th day of treatment, there was no difference in relative shoot growth among the fall dormancy groupings and the consequences of a low shoot water potential on stomatal conductance were similar among the fall dormancy groups.
