Potential applications of the PEESS range from energy intensive services (such as load shifting, peaking shaving, and wind/solar leveling) to power intensive applications (such as emergency load shedding, regulation, load following, and frequency regulation).
Energy storage can be used for a variety of functions including regulation, load following, and energy shifting to add or absorb energy from a power system when there is too little or too much renewable energy.
Meanwhile, with the increase of wind and solar power penetration in power system, the intermittency and fluctuation will inevitably cause a volatility, high uncertainty and complexity in renewable energy generation, and will require more flexible resources for frequency regulation, load tracking and base-load supply.
Simulation results show that the N-PI controller can provide better dynamic performances of power regulation, load stress reduction and actuator usage, comparing with the conventional PI and gain-scheduled PI controller, and better robustness against of model uncertainties than feedback linearization control.
