In 2004, more than 400 regular delegates to the convention were members of the two unions, making up a group bigger than every state delegation except California's.
While they only make up about one-sixth of the total delegates, they are more than enough to swing the election either way – even if a candidate clearly wins a majority of votes and regular delegates during the primary season.

But if you follow Ms. Ferraro's logic that the superdelegates should "lead, not follow," I can imagine the Democratic Party self-destructing if Barack Obama is leading in regular delegates and popular numbers but the superdelegates overturn that vote and nominate Mrs. Clinton.
Here's why: Both candidates are picking up more superdelegates every day; at a certain point, of a consensus emerges that one or the other candidate has a lock on the nomination – either because he or she has won the most states, or has a lead in regular delegates – there will probably be a rush of superdelegates that would result in one or the other candidates going over the top.
