So when I stumbled duty-bound on Michael Barone, a conservative columnist, claiming that liberals cocoon more thoroughly than conservatives, to their disadvantage, I recalled and sorely regretted reading things that prevented my easy agreement.
In the years I've been reading children's books, both legitimately, as a child, and with furtive defiance, as an adult, I've never regretted reading any of the prize's winners or shortlisted books.
In person, it may be possible to explain to a grown-up child that their birth was a shock but was not something you regretted – reading a public post written at the time and detailing strong emotions is a rather different proposition.
