Kurosawa's Waga seishun ni kuinashi (1946; No Regrets for Our Youth) portrays the history of Japanese militarism from 1933 through the end of the war in terms of a person executed on suspicion of espionage during the war.
Kurosawa was better known for films with contemporary settings and social problems -- "No Regrets for Our Youth" (1946); "The Silent Duel" (1949), about medicine; "Stray Dog" (1949), a film noir adapted from Simenon; and "Scandal" (1950), about the press.
In "No Regrets for Our Youth" (1946), he had even allowed himself to entertain the possibility of a kind of back-to-the-land redemption for his shamed nation, and trotted out an impressive array of heroic Soviet-style cinematic techniques to drive the message home.
After the war, Hara became a key face in Japan's cinematic revival, and was cast in a lead role in Akira Kurosawa's No Regrets for Our Youth (1946) and Kōzaburō Yoshimura's A Ball at the Anjo House (1947), both of which lamented the price Japan paid for its prewar militarism.
