By using novel extended finite element method (XFEM) and crack tip region meshing refinement based on virtual-node polygonal finite element method (VPM), a semi-elliptical surface crack was then inserted into a predicted macroscopic hot spot to carry out the thermal fatigue cracking analysis under consecutive emergency braking.
The combination of the dynamic-boundary method with a multi-region mesh counteracts the increase in computational cost, which is intrinsic to simulations featuring dynamic domains.

New fabricated meshes were uniaxially less stiff (less than 0.24 N/mm and 1.20 N/mm in toe and linear regions, respectively) than the Gynemesh (0.48 N/mm and 2.08 N/mm in toe and linear regions, respectively) and IntePro (0.57 N/mm in toe region) clinical meshes, with the gelatin coated PA mesh exhibiting lower permanent strain than Polyform clinical mesh (8.1% vs. 23.5%).
The Near wall region is meshed much finer (5.829e−002 mm) than shell wall regions in size to obtain optimized results as shown in Fig. 4a c.
Then, all tissue regions were meshed with conforming boundaries cooperatively.
The zoom at the right-hand side shows that the shape model includes a detailed geometry of the lip region: a lip mesh that is positioned semiautomatically using a generic lip model [12] as well as a mesh that fills the inner space.
To accurately map the topography and bathymetry of the region to the mesh, a minimum element size of approximately 400 m at the upper boundary was chosen, and the mesh was coarsened to a maximum size of 8000 m at the lower boundary.
GAMBIT®2.3 was used to compartmentalize the three-dimensional mesh region.
