The most striking difference between regenerated and control barbels is that the central rod of connective tissue is not replaced by a similar structure, but by an accumulation of rounded mesenchymal cells embedded within tangled strands of extracellular matrix– an arrangement resembling scar tissue.
A tissue dependent reaction of the maize ubiquitin promoter in the regenerated positive control line was also detected.
To evaluate whether histological differences between the regenerated muscles from control and mutant mice were associated with a difference in the functional recovery from injury, maximal tetanic force was measured before and 21 days after CTX (Fig. 5D).
As predicted, there was a higher oleic acid content in line #1-1 and a much higher level of oleic acid in line #1-2 compared with regenerated shoots from control (untransformed) cotyledons.
As these authors noted, "We should expect the difference in velocity (between control and regenerated fibers) to be least if the normal spacing were somewhat above, and the reduced spacing below, the value which would give maximum velocity".
Animals injected with fst dsRNA developed aberrant brains as labeled by chat expression, and in some cases produced no blastemas (n = 7/10 aberrant, 1/10 no blastema), while animals injected with control dsRNA regenerated normally (10/10 normal).
Interestingly, in Figure 3 d) the difference in the total number of myelinated fibers counted in light microscopy or electron microscopy in both controls and regenerated nerves can be appreciated.
Surprisingly, blocked or non-regenerated lymphatic collectors were almost completely lined with lymphatic endothelium (Fig. 4c, Bl), although they were completely deprived of SMCs and their average diameter was approximately half that of control and regenerated lymphatics.
Twenty-one dafterfter injury, while a complete regeneration was observed in control muscles, characterized by centrally located, nuclei mutant muscles displayed increased interstitial spaces and smaller regenerated myofibers (Fig. 5A and B).
