Such accounts were not simply descriptive, but were aimed, initially, to make evident the way in which the social norms governing female 'bodily comportment' yielded an inhibited intentionality, an interruption in the pre-reflexive engagement with our environment to which Merleau-Ponty had drawn attention in his work (1962).
In general terms (Forsberg et al. 2015), RRI advocates the reflexive and collective engagement with societal values, needs and goals, as a prerequisite to orient research and innovation practice and policy accordingly.

The production of engagement, legitimacy and accountability are themselves interventions in the sociotechnical system and reflexive at that.
There are four main components to NPT: coherence (or sense-making); cognitive participation (or engagement); collective action (work done to enable the intervention to happen); and reflexive monitoring (formal and informal appraisal of the benefits and costs of the intervention) [ 34].
Following this theoretical framework, we will consider coherence or meaning of the intervention to participants, cognitive participation or engagement of providers and study participants, whether collective action of providers occurs and reflexive monitoring or appraisal of the intervention by participants.
