Passions can oppose what we approve on reflection, and it is what we approve on reflection that is considered 'rational.' Moreover, reflective evaluations are what ground moral judgments.
It also includes the finding and testing of different approaches, the collection of ideas, the appropriation of knowledge, and a constant reflection and evaluation (Csikszentmihalyi & Sawyer, 2014; DeHaan, 2009; Runco, 2004).
In other cases the term is associated with concepts that are clearly cognitive: critical analysis, critical view, critical reading, critical understanding, critical reflection, critical evaluation, critical look, critical approach, and, above all, critical thinking.
Moreover, even if advocates of autonomy as responsiveness-to-reasoning have nothing in particular in mind when they speak of the process of "reflection," "rational evaluation," etc., reasoning is a norm-governed process that an agent might reject for reasons of her own.
Support from science teachers is essential, as it has been found that many students need appropriate guidance and scaffolds to conduct high-order reasoning and develop sounder arguments (e.g., reflection or evaluation of personal arguments) regarding SSI (Naylor et al. 2001; Simon et al. 2006; Zohar & Nemet, 2002).
