Firefighters from three counties aided efforts to contain the blaze, and on Friday refinery employees helped the recovery effort because they were more familiar with the plant layout than were the rescue workers.

Data for the study was collected during five months of fieldwork at the refinery and interviews with 70 refinery employees.
The general said the militants were repelled after attacking a village south of the refinery, a housing compound for refinery employees, and a smaller facility to the east of Baiji.
The majority of these workers were petroleum refinery employees, but production, pipeline, and distribution workers in the petroleum industry were also included.
An excess of disease among men could also point to occupational exposure, although a substantial number of the refinery employees lived outside of the study area (e.g., north Davis County and Salt Lake County).
Other occupations which might involve exposure to solvents or related chemicals and which are reported as being at increased risk of NHL include those of highway workers [ 34], petroleum refinery employees [ 70- 72], styrene workers [ 73], chemists [ 74, 75], and chemical manufacturers [ 76, 77].

The hasty exit came after Queensland Nickel sent a letter to its 700-odd employees on Tuesday, warning the refinery could close if employees themselves didn't join in to lobby the government for help.
