However, the latest survey of estate agents by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) suggests that the mood has altered – partly as a result of the stamp duty changes that took effect in April and prompted landlords to bring forward purchases, and partly as a result of the forthcoming EU vote – although referendum effects are mostly focused on London.
"Referendum effects are likely to make macroeconomic and financial market indicators harder to interpret over the next few months, and the committee is likely to react more cautiously to data news over this period than would normally be the case," they said.
Newton Dunn wrote that "our revelations will trigger an almighty row" because her view "on something as big as Brexit" could have an effect on the referendum outcome.
Jo Johnson, minister of state for universities and science, told scientists in June that "the referendum result has no immediate effect on those applying to or participating in Horizon 2020.
"The early indications had been broadly consistent with this assessment, and this had been reflected in the August inflation report projections … The referendum outcome had a pronounced effect on the domestic outlook".
Even Swiss football fans are scratching their heads over the effect of the referendum result: as a German TV programme showed, if you were to take players with a multicultural background out of the national team's last starting line-up, you would be left with a three-man team.
It referred specifically to Brexit, noting that "any effects of the referendum outcome on global economic activity remain to be seen and, outside the effects on the UK economy itself, may be hard to discern".
He said he would attempt to mitigate the negative effects of the referendum result.
One senior official involved in the discussions insisted that the Venezuelans use constitutional means, like a referendum, to effect an overthrow.
